North Metropolitan TAFE offers over 350 courses to 30,000 students across nine campuses in the greater north and north eastern metropolitan regions of Perth.

Working closely with industry and employers, North Metropolitan TAFE uses its knowledge and understanding of changing business models and contemporary training techniques to provide solutions to meet the current and future skill requirements of individuals, enterprise and the community.

Situated in the heart of Northbridge’s vibrant Cultural Precinct, North Metropolitan TAFE’s sophisticated approach to training in visual art, design and media, makes it Perth’s premier provider of arts education.

We are proud to be a member of the Joondalup Learning Precinct (JLP) and share workforce capability opportunities with the City of Joondalup, ECU and the WA Police Academy.

With some of the world’s largest engineering, mining and construction companies located in WA, North Metropolitan TAFE works closely with key partners such as Pilbara Minerals, Roy Hill and Anglo Ashanti Gold Australia to provide customised training for their workforce.

We are also committed to the development and delivery of targeted skill sets and qualifications to support future jobs in mining, automation, virtual and augmented reality, robotics and cyber security.

North Metropolitan TAFE has strong links with industry and service providers across WA to ensure that the need for skilled workers in the health, aged care and disability sectors is met.

Our hospitality students and staff win numerous awards at state, national and global events including the Nestle Golden Chef’s Hat Competition and the Australian Culinary Federation’s Apprentice of the Year Awards.

Our history

North Metropolitan TAFE has more than a century-long history, starting life as Western Australia’s first post-secondary education provider, Perth Technical College, in 1900.

Perth Technical College eventually became Central Institute of Technology. Central and West Coast Institute came together to form North Metropolitan TAFE in 2016. Polytechnic West campuses, Balga and Midland, joined us in early 2017.

Each campus has the facilities, equipment and technology that focuses on making our graduates job-ready.

Our governance

The role of the Governing Council is to ensure that clear management, effective decision making and governance frameworks are in place and functioning for North Metropolitan TAFE.

The Governing Council is accountable to the Minister and Western Australian community for the performance of North Metropolitan TAFE.

Each Council member has been selected for their experience and expertise in education, training, industry or community affairs, and for their ability to contribute to the strategic direction of North Metropolitan TAFE.

Members are appointed for a three-year term, and at the end of their term are eligible for re-appointment.

Mara is presently a coordinator, Kulungu Aboriginal Research Development Unit with the Telethon Kids Institute.

She has extensive knowledge of education and training for Aboriginal people having worked in this area in the resources and government sectors.

Mara is the chairperson of the Aboriginal Employment, Education and Training Committee for North Metropolitan TAFE.

Cheryl is currently the National Security Sales Director for Microsoft. She was previously the WA State Director of Microsoft and has experience in several fields including Executive Leadership, Executive Management, Management Consulting, Business Development and Strategy.

She has previously held Senior Management and leadership positions with other National and Multinational ICT companies and has worked with Start-ups, SME’s and has owned and operated her own IT and Management Consulting business. 

She is an experienced board director and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.  Cheryl holds multiple board positions and has held several advisory positions with the Australian and WA Government, and across the IT Industry. 

Cheryl is passionate about lifelong learning and ensuring a rich culture of Diversity and Inclusion.

Michelle is an ex-officio member of the Governing Council by virtue of her position as Managing Director of North Metropolitan TAFE.

Over the last 20 years Michelle has held a number of senior roles in the vocational education and training sector.

Michelle has worked with diverse client groups in regional and metropolitan Western Australia, collaborating across government and the private sector to maximise training opportunities and outcomes.

Amy Barrett-Lennard has over twenty-five years’ experience as a dynamic artistic and cultural leader. 

From 2006 – 2022, she was Director/CEO of the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA). Prior to that she held positions as: Director of the Linden Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne; Curator of the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, Victoria; Curator of the Goldfields Arts Centre Gallery, Kalgoorlie- Boulder; and Manager of the British Pavilion at the 1995 Venice Biennale. 

A regular contributor to the broader local and national arts and cultural communities, Amy has sat on numerous boards and panels including those for the Australia Council for the Arts, Arts Victoria, NETS Victoria, Museums Australia, the Victorian College of the Arts, Art on the Move and the federal government’s Visions of Australia program. She was President of the Contemporary Arts Organisations Australia (CAOA) network from 2009 – 2015, a member of the Murdoch University Art Collection Board; Edith Cowan University’s CREATEC (Centre of Research in Entertainment, Arts, Technology, Education and Communications) Board and the Chamber of Arts and Culture WA Board.

For the past two years she has been a Judge for the Telstra Best of Business Awards.

Professor Rowena Harper is ECU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education), with a portfolio that includes Library, the Centre for Learning and Teaching, Student Administration, and Employability.

Professor Harper’s experience spans over 20 years of practice, research and professional service in higher education. She has taught in arts and humanities, enabling education and academic language and learning. She has also led services in the areas of learning support, staff development, curriculum innovation, and learning technologies. She is a former President of the Association for Academic Language and Learning (AALL), and co-founder of the International Consortium of Academic Language and Learning Developers (ICALLD).

As an active researcher, Professor Harper is perhaps best known for her work in academic integrity. She has also researched in educational development in digital learning environments, and English language and communication development.

Irene has dedicated a lifetime of distinguished service to vocational education and training both in Australia and internationally. She has a wealth of experience across the private and public sectors, and within agencies, with experience in VET regulation in WA and nationally.  

Irene has 40 years’ experience in the disciplines of vocational education and training (VET), secondary and tertiary education and human resources management. Her industry experience spans a broad range of areas including oil and gas, automotive, mining, services to mining, metals and engineering, manufacturing, and professional services. Her most recent role was Deputy Chief Commissioner with the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).

Irene holds several board and advisory positions and manages her own consultancy providing training and development opportunities across sectors and industries.

Hoosein was born and raised in South Africa. From the struggles of apartheid in South Africa to his work with communities and WA state government agencies, Hoosein has spent his life in the service of others and is committed to bringing people together in the spirit of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Throughout his life he has been committed to this pursuit. During the 1980's he resisted apartheid in South Africa. On moving to New Zealand in 1999, he worked with migrant communities to help them integrate in their new found home. Here in Western Australia, he continues to do the same whilst also serving as a Justice of the Peace and on numerous boards, committees and not for profit management teams.

Hoosein also serves on the WA Police Advisory board for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. In addition, Hoosein serves on the Community Grants Program Assessment Panel appointed by the Minister of Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs.

Hoosein is the founder of RegalBiz Bookkeeping and Accounting Services. He has previously held senior finance management roles at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, Mighty River Power in New Zealand and Lend Lease in Australia. Hoosein is also a registered Tax Practitioner and registered with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB).

In 2019 Hoosein's contribution for his advocacy for Human Rights was featured at an exhibition in Fremantle by the United Nations.

Craig is the Head of Grain Technology at CBH Group.

His professional career spans the academic, biotechnology, management consulting, telecommunications and agriculture industries with extensive experience in Strategy, Technology, Transformation, Innovation and Governance.

Craig holds a PhD from the University of Western Australian, an MBA from Melbourne Business School and is a Graduate of the Australian Industry of Company Directors.

Shaun has more than 30 years’ experience empowering organisations to advance their strategic direction, proactively manage change, and develop the potential of their people.

His former senior roles at the Australian Institute of Management in Western Australia have given him unrivalled access to hundreds of organisations across multiple industries.  He has delivered programs throughout Australia and in the USA, Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia.

He has served as the Chair of the national Business Services Industry Reference Committee, Chair of John XXIII College and Deputy Chair of the FAPSTC Training Council.

Shaun has completed his Doctor of Business Administration with a research focus on the practical aspects of organisational leadership.

 

Kieran is currently the Indigenous People Strategy Manager at bp.

He is a proud Yamatji man with a career spanning not-for-profit, mining and resources, corporate, and government sectors. He has held various positions focusing on youth, vocational education and training, employment, procurement, policy and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs.

Kieran is passionate about advocating for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities and has dedicated his career to position himself in roles where he can actively contribute to influencing positive change.

Kieran is a current member of North Metropolitan TAFE’s Aboriginal Employment, Education and Training Committee, as well as having been a previous employee.

Adam is presently the General Manager, Group Finance of Bunnings and is a Fellow of the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.

Adam has previously held senior roles within Wesfarmers, the Office of the Auditor General of Western Australia and Deloitte.

Adam has been a member of the North Metropolitan TAFE's Finance and Audit Committee since its inauguration and prior to that was a member of Central TAFE's Finance and Risk Management Committee.

Sheralee is currently the Director Clinical Workforce and Development at the Department of Health Western Australia and has a of wealth of experience in health, health workforce, education sector, policy and research. 

Sheralee is a clinician at heart and has held several key leadership positions. She is an experienced board member and holds several advisory positions.

Sheralee has a PhD from the University of Notre Dame Australia and is passionate about growing and supporting workforce and its culture through education.

Freedom of Information

The Western Australian Freedom of Information Act 1992 (FOI Act) gives right of access to information held by North Metropolitan TAFE.

The FOI Act requires North Metropolitan TAFE to make available details about the kind of information we hold and enables persons to ensure that personal information held by North Metropolitan TAFE about them is "accurate, complete, up to date and not misleading".
