Equipment and licenses

Licenses

Licensed trades will require apprentices to hold a provisional training license.

Electrical

Both the employer and the apprentice have the responsibility to ensure that an electrician’s training licence is obtained before the apprentice carries out any electrical work and/or training.

At the completion of their apprenticeship, an apprentice must obtain an electrician’s licence before they can carry out electrical work lawfully as a tradesperson.

Applications for both licences must be made to the Director of Energy Safety at the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS).

Plumbing

Apprentice plumbers/gas fitters are required to have a permit to work under supervision before undertaking any gasfitting. Permits are usually able to be obtained in the second year of the apprenticeship.

Certificate III in Security

Apprentices must obtain a conditional installers license(opens in a new tab) as required by the WA Police Force Licensing and Compliance Unit.

Penalties apply for working without required licences.

White cards

NMTAFE delivers this training as part of many Pre-apprenticeship courses and can arrange for replacements for lost White Cards. For detailed information about White Cards and construction inductions, see our White Cards page.

Apprentice and trainee dress and equipment requirements

The following standard dress requirements apply to all workshop areas:

  • Safety work boots MUST be worn at all times.
    • Heavy leather uppers and heavy-duty soles.
    • No sand shoe volley type of footwear allowed (even with steel caps).
  • Protective eye wear to Australian Standards Safety Glasses – must be clear inside.
  • Hearing protection is required. This is a minimum requirement, as per safe operating procedures, for using power tools. For hygiene reasons apprentice must provide their own.

Other areas such as electrical, salons, kitchens and other simulated work environments will have specific requirements for their areas in regard to dress standards, textbooks and equipment that you will need to have to be work ready.

Students must be work ready at all times as there is no specific scheduled time for the theory or practical components of the training you will be given. Any student who attends training without appropriate PPE may have admission to workshops refused and be returned to work.

Students that are required to purchase equipment may be able to access Australian Apprenticeship Support Loans(opens in a new tab) .
